Today my dad (a scientist) came into school and shared his slide about drosophila melanogaster. It was all about how they live. He worked with 3 other scientists that won the nobel prize for finding out the clockwork gene, or period gene, that acts like a clock in the fly’s body (I’m just trying to simplify it). One of the things I learned from him is that 61% of fruit fly genes is the same as human genes. The period gene is a gene in the fly’s and human’s brain that uses a special pattern to keep on going for lifetime. But if you put a fruit fly or a human in a dark, dark room they will still wake up when they usually wake up. Mutant fruit flies have different time scales. It is either longer or shorter than 24 hours. Different places in the world have different time zones. Jet lag is when your biological internal clock in your brain get messed up by traveling to different time zones and get used to it then go back. You got used to that specific time scale and returned to where you started. That causes you to get sleepy by day and feel awake at nighttime. It takes a few days at where you started to recover. He really likes science because he can explore to infinity. Hope you enjoyed!
