Joides Resolution by Gia
The JR is a huge ship. They have a big and heavy drill. It digs deep down in the ocean. The drill picks up fossils and take it up to the surface for the scientists to exam. When the core is on deck the say “core on the floor”. There are so many different scientists on board. Also the scientists can see what time period the fossils are from.
The Zoom Session With the JOIDES RESOLUTION
Today we had a Zoom session with the JOIDES RESOLUTION.The cabins are shared with another person. There are bunk beds and drawers for clothes, shared shower and toilet with 4 people. The people on the JR will eat the same thing as they eat at home. They have found things from the ice age, warming period, nso and dinosaur. The JR also has never had an emergency take. The oldest they found where plankton fossils from 65,0000 years ago. The zoom session with the JOIDES RESOLUTION was fun and very exciting!
We zoomed with the Joides Resolution. The Joides Resolution total trip was 5000 miles. The Joides Resolution can go 15 mph. The derrick is 150ft tall. The scientists have not found megalodon fossils yet. Plankton fossils were found by scientists and they are 64 million years old and they found volcano ash. The scientist found things from the ice age. They told us a lot and we learned a lot.

The ship, the JR is working on the ocean. The JR is trying to find out all about the fossils from long ago. They use special drill bits to drill into the ocean floor. There are 3 of them. The JR has a rig called the derrick. One of the drill bits is for rough terrain. And one is smaller than the others. Then there is a middle one. Today we zoomed with the Joides Resolution, JR for short, which is a huge boat. They are trying to uncover Earth's past by drilling into the earth’s crust. They are currently in the South Pacific Ocean. They found a lot of plankton fossils from 64 million years ago. They also found a lot of tiny shells.
We also learned about where they sleep and what they eat. They have to share a cabin. There’s a person that does the night shift 12 P.M-12 A.M and there's a person that does day shift 12 A.M-12 P.M. Four people have to share one bathroom. And they eat mostly meat. Chefs can make almost anything that they like. And they also have a Ice cream maker!!!!!!! By: Reese and Crystal
The JR is really big. They say core on the floor when the core is on the deck. People take it on the catwalk. Then put it in laser kitty it lasers the core package to label it. Then they take it to let it cool down. Then it goes through lots of mashies. Then they take it to the thing that cuts it. Finally scientists look at it. The JR is huge. By Harper
We zoomed with the people on the Joides Resolution. They do not have any pets on board. The derrick is 150 feet tall. The total trip is 5000 miles. There are 108 different jobs on the ship. They don't get seasick. They can drill into the crust. They found plankton fossils 64 million years old. They found volcano ash.We learned a lot.

The Joides Resolution is a really big boat. Everybody on the Joides Resolution has to share a cabin. The people on the Joides Resolution get 4 meals a day.The people on board are mostly scientists. The Joides Resolution is a really cool boat. I really want to do another zoom with them.
The Derrick and Drill
On the boat they have a derick that has a drill. In the middle the derrick also has a tube called a core. When they put the core into the ground they are wanting to find fossils. When they bring up the core from the ocean and the core is on the deck they say “core on the floor.” they put a number on the cores and they also lazer the same number on the core for backup.
On the joides resolution they look for fossils that are from long, long ago.In the middle the derrick There is also has a tube called a core. When they put the core into the ground they are wanting to find fossils. They look to see how far back the fossils came from. Some fossils they found are from many years ago.
There are many things they do on the JOIDES RESOLUTION. When the scientists dig into the ground they use a drill bit with a tube in it. So when the drill bit digs into the earth's crust they get fossils, rocks, plankton, microbes. Then they give it to a lab that looks at it and says what it is. They know what it is because they use their microscope to see what it is. Digging into the earth’s crust help people learn what lived long ago.
The cat walk is where they get the fossils cut it and give it to the lab. Then the lab studies the fossil and puts in a machine that tells the id number. They also determine how old it is. Before they give the fossil to the lab they cut the fossil and put a cap on it. The cat walk helps with the fossils and other things.

The JR is a ship that has scientists that study fossils. The ship has many labs where the scientist work.Tubes come up from drilling the tubes and then go to the catwalk. They get cut. Then scientists look at them and laser printer them to show the type of core. Then it gets cut in half. The scientists study the core. Then they start drilling again and the scientists get ready.
